At Urban Cooling, we provide fully internal air conditioning, which requires no exterior modifications to your property. All of our solutions offer the same performance as conventional air conditioning. The difference is, you don’t need planning permission because they don’t require an external unit to be installed.
Why Is Conventional Air Conditioning Not an Option for Apartments, Flats and Listed Buildings?
The reason many other air conditioning companies can’t provide you with a solution for your property is that the majority of air conditioner systems require an outside condenser to be installed on a property’s exterior.
This is bad news if you live in either a new build flat or apartment bound by restrictions, in a converted listed building or a property that is within a conservation area. In these types of property, an outside condenser is not an option either due to the restrictions on making exterior modifications to your property or simply because of a lack of space.
Planning Restrictions
New build apartment owners are often not permitted to make exterior modifications to the building. Similarly, those living in listed properties and buildings in conservation areas usually require planning permission to alter a building’s exterior.
This can make installing an air conditioner challenging as you need to work with these restrictions.
Lack of Space
Not all new-build apartments or flats have the same restrictions, there are some buildings where external air conditioning condensers can be installed.
However, the issue with these buildings may simply be a lack of space. You might have a balcony but an external condenser will mean your outdoor space becomes extremely restricted. You also might not want to block your window with an air con unit.

How Does Our Internal Air Conditioning Work?
Our internal air conditioning systems operate in a similar way to conventional split-type air conditioning systems that have an external 'unit'. However, rather than the air conditioner using the outside air to cool the heated gas refrigerant, our system is designed to use water instead.
This means that the system is fully internal as it does not need an outdoor condenser, just a water supply and waste drain to connect to the indoor condenser.

Our smallest condenser measures just 500mm x 500mm x 295mm, allowing it to be conveniently stored in cupboards or under a sink. This makes it ideal for properties where space is at a premium.
Integrates With Existing Pipework
Our air conditioning systems utilise the latest refrigerant pipework, all of which is contained within your property. This means nothing needs to be installed externally and we don’t need access to the outside of your property to fit your system.
WiFi
Enabled
All our indoor units are WiFi enabled allowing you to control your air conditioning from your phone. This enables you to set the temperature remotely so you'll never have to worry about leaving your air conditioning on or having to arrive home to a hot and stuffy apartment or flat.

Just like with a conventional split system, our water cooled condenser units can be connected to a range of different indoor units. This includes multiple customisable wall unit options, as well as floor mounted and ducted units hidden behind a grill, as long as you have sufficient void space above your ceiling.

Do I need to get planning permission to have a water cooled air conditioning system installed?
The fully-internal water-cooled air conditioning system doesn’t require planning permission. This is ideal for apartment owners as there is no external unit and no external modification to the property is required.
If the air conditioning system is to be installed into a listed building or a property within a conservation area, you may be unsure whether installation is permitted. If this is the case, we suggest you seek advice from your local planning office
How does internal air conditioning compare to conventional air conditioning?
Our wide range of internal water air conditioning systems provide a cooling capacity of up to 15kw and a cooling power input of up to 5kw. This makes our internal systems as powerful and efficient as any conventional air conditioning unit.
Our internal water cooled air conditioner can supply up to 8 rooms with cool air at the specified desired temperature, easily controlled with our smartphone app or remote.
How is an internal water cooled system installed?
The installation process for this system is straightforward and takes on average one day per indoor unit.
Firstly, we install the condenser and connect it to your water mains, drainage and electrical supply. Its compact design makes it easy to conceal in a utility room or cupboard.
Next the indoor units (which can be wall mounted, floor mounted or ducted) are installed in each room which requires cooling. The optimal locations are established at survey stage, ensuring the property is cooled in the most efficient way.
How big is the internal water cooled condenser unit?
We have a wide range of condensers that increase in size depending on the number of indoor units they are required to provide cool air to. The smallest condenser we have is just 500mm x 500mm x 295mm.
Does the water cooled system heat as well as cool?
Our water cooled system does provide heating; however, we advise only using this as a backup and not a primary source of heating for your home.
Can the wall unit be taken off the wall/removed in a rented apartment?
Yes, if you were to sell or move out of your property and you wish to take your system with you we would need to attend and decommission the system. This would involve pumping down the system so the refrigerant is safely stored inside the condenser unit, isolating the electrical power and communication cables and then taking down the units from the walls - please note that there will be some small holes in the wall that would need to be repaired after the wall units have been taken down.
Is there anywhere I can see the units in person?
