Air conditioning does a lot more than simply cool the air in your home or office. Depending on your air conditioning system, it can help keep rooms at a constant temperature, reduce humidity, circulate and flow and actually improve the indoor air quality.

Improving air quality is important, as indoor air pollution can often be worse than outdoor air pollution. As we can spend up to 90% of our time inside, this can mean that we’re exposed to poor air quality the majority of the time.

While there are ways that you can reduce indoor air pollution – which our helpful blog explains – a really effective way to help improve air quality is by installing air conditioning. But why is this the case and how does air conditioning improve the quality of air in your home?

Improved Airflow

Airflow and good ventilation are important when it comes to improving air quality. While you can improve airflow by opening doors and windows, this also means allowing pollutants from outside – such as exhaust fumes and pollen – to enter your house.

Air conditioning effectively fills your home with cool, fresh air. It also keeps the air moving to stop it from becoming stale. This is ideal when you’re in the house all the time and when you’ve been away without the AC on for a week or more.

Removes Moisture

Excess moisture in the air, whether it’s due to high humidity, running the shower or drying clothes on radiators, can contribute to the growth of mould, fungus, mildew, bacteria and viruses. Bacteria and viruses can spread easily, causing illness, while mould fungus and mildew spread spores into the air.

Reducing humidity can help avoid new growths, but you will likely have to treat any areas already affected by mould, mildew and fungus. Doing so will contribute to healthier air and allow your air conditioning system to keep working to reduce further growth.

Filters The Air

While your air conditioning is working to cool the air and remove moisture, it is also filtering it. Depending on the filter used by your system, your air conditioning can remove dust, pathogens and bacteria, allowing it to pump out clean cool air.

This is great for those that have respiratory illness or even hay fever, as well as everyone else. Keeping the air fresh and clean can reduce the likelihood of existing conditions from getting worse as a result of indoor air pollution.

Keeping Your Air Conditioning Functioning

While all of this is great news when it comes to improving indoor air quality, your air conditioning can only function this way if it is looked after.

Filters can become blocked over time, so it is important that they are changed or washed regularly – depending on the time of filter in your machine. Not only will this enable your system to keep filtering the air to a high standard, but it also reduces strain on it so it works better in general.

It’s also a good idea to get your air conditioning serviced once a year. This will keep it in tip-top condition for as long as possible, so you can keep enjoying cooler, healthier air.

We aim to make your air conditioning service as easy as possible, so a member of our team will contact you when it’s getting close to your servicing date to get you booked in. We also offer a 5-year parts and labour warranty on our internal water-cooled air conditioning systems, so you have peace of mind that we’re always on hand to help if something does go wrong.
